1. The production of energy the sun’s power is steadily increasing, In some parts of the world solar power has become even cheaper than fossil fuels like oil or natural gas. At the moment the worlds production of solar power is at about 140 gigawatts and moving steadily upward. In the near future up to five percent of the world’s energy could come from the sun. Solar power is probably the cleanest form of energy. There is no pollution and it does not contribute to global warming. While for a long time, solar power was an energy form that only industrialized countries could afford, it has now come to South America and Asia. China is currently the biggest producer of solar panels. It has been producing solar cells and photvolatic systems on a large basis making them cheaper to install. As technology becomes more and more affordable, prices go down.

Real exam multiple choice multiple answer PTE 7

More and more people around the world are putting up small photovoltaic systems on their roofs. Many governments are subsidizing solar power by giving tax breaks to people who put solar panels on their roofs. Germany and Japan are the number one countries when it comes to solar power. The governments there have introduced programs to get people to invest in solar energy. As a result, carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced drastically.

In Japan there are even solar panels floating on the man made lakes of a dam. Solar power is opening up new opportunities for developing countries. Many of these countries would have to wait for a long time to get enough electricity. The sun’s energy does not only provide us with light and heat. As solar cells are becoming more efficient solar power has become a source of energy for many devices and machines, from cell phones tears, ships and plants.

Question: List the advantages of solar energy.

a. clean, pollution free and does not contribute to globe warming

b. Solar cells are efficient enough to provide energy for a number of devices. Cell phones, airplanes

c. It is popular, affordable and easily available.

d. People using solar panels will get tax rebate.

e. China will lead in the production of solar panels by next decade.

2. The largest offshore wind farm in the world will be built about 20 km off the Scottish coast,.According to the Norwegian energy company State oil, which will operate the wind farm, turbines will generate about 30 megawatts of electricity through wind power by the end of 2017. While wind turbines on land stand on massive concrete and steel foundations, building them in the open sea is quite a challenge. Existing wind turbines in the ocean have all been anchored to the ocean floor, which can only be done in shallow water. statoil’s new turbines will be fixed

to a steel tube that floats in the water. With this new technology it will be possible to make use of wind power in deeper waters. Off shore wind farms are spread out over much of northern Europe, especially in the shallow waters of the North and Baltic seas, but china and Japan have also built wind turbines off their coasts. Currently, offshore wind energy makes up only about 3% of the total wind power that is produced on earth. The first off shore wind farm was built off the Norwegian coast in 2009. The open sea offers a lot of potential for energy because winds are strongest there.

Question: Where does one find offshore wind farms?

a. Southern Europe

b. Both deep and shallow waters.

c. North sea and Baltic sea

d. China, Japan and Norway

e. Scotland
